Chapter 13

Hayden and Kate were having dinner at her parents’ house. Rachel had opted not to come.

“Thanks for dinner, Julia,” Kate said.

“Kate, how many times do I have to tell you that you don’t have to thank me for dinner,” Julia said. “You’re welcome anytime.”

“What’s Rachel planning to do exactly?” David asked. It was clear that he was mad.

“I don’t know, Dad,” Hayden said. She really hated being in the middle of her parents and Rachel.

“You know she’s making a mistake, right?” David asked. “You told her she’s making a mistake?”

“No, I didn’t tell her she’s making a mistake.”

“Why?” David asked.

“Because I don’t think she’s making a mistake.”

“Hayden, she needs a college degree. What is she going to do without an education?”

“She doesn’t know what she wants to study yet,” Hayden argued. “Don’t you think it would be better for her to wait until she does?”

“No, I don’t. I think she should take her general education courses until she figures it out.”

“Why can’t you guys let Rachel make this decision? It’s not like she’s not working.”

“I’d barely call it working, Hayden,” David said. “She needs to start working towards a career.”

“Rachel is smart,” Hayden argued. “She’ll figure it out.”

“Maybe we should talk about something else,” Julia suggested.

The tension between Hayden and David was escalating quickly. The father and daughter hardly ever argued, but when they did it wasn’t something anyone wanted to witness.

“That sounds like a great idea,” Kate agreed.

“Why don’t you two head into the living room and we’ll bring dessert out in a minute,” Julia said.

Hayden sighed as she and Kate got up from the table and went into the living room.

“Please don’t fight with your dad,” Kate said.

“He’s being unreasonable. It’s no wonder Rachel wants to move out.”

“It’s different for him than it is for you. You’re Rachel’s sister, he’s her father.”

“I still want what’s best for her though. Forcing her into something she doesn’t want to do isn’t what’s best for her.”

“But your father wants to make sure all of his kids are taken care of. He’s just worried that Rachel won’t be able to survive on her own in the world.”

“I get that, but he’s going about this in the wrong way. He’s pushing Rachel further away.”

Kate exhaled as she sat down on the couch. She wasn’t sure how else to help the situation. All the Kovacs were so stubborn. Each of them thought they were right and none of them seemed to be listening to what the other thought.

“I forgot my phone in the kitchen,” Hayden said. “I’ll be right back.”

Hayden went back towards the kitchen but stopped when she heard her father and mother talking in a hushed tone.

“It will be okay, David,” Julia said.

“I’m not so sure,” David said. “At least before we had the bar for the kids to fall back on. I’m worried that if Rachel doesn’t start getting serious about a career she won’t have any options. The bar might not be around much longer.”

“Don’t say that.”

“It’s the truth, sweetheart.
